This course is designed to provide an introduction to elementary Mandarin with the emphasis on developing practical listening, speaking and reading skills. The course will focus on the linguistic skills necessary to cope with a range of daily life situations, using the language effectively for social and professional purposes, and introduce students to aspects of Chinese culture.

The module will initially be taught in English with a gradual increase in the use of Mandarin. The emphasis of the module will be on communication and acculturation with a view to preparing students for travel, commerce and work in the global context. Students will also begin familiarisation with Chinese characters.
