This course is designed to provide an introduction to elementary Japanese with the emphasis on developing practical listening, speaking and reading skills. The course will focus on the linguistic skills necessary to cope with a range of daily life situations, using the language effectively for social and professional purposes, and introduce students to aspects of Japanese culture.

The module will initially be taught in English  or Welsh with a gradual increase in the use of Japanese. The emphasis of the module will be on communication and acculturation with a view to preparing students for travel, commerce and work in the global context. Students will also begin familiarisation with the Japanese writing system.
